At 09:42 Hours on Thursday December 22nd 2011 the Islip Fire Department responded for a report of an apartment on fire at 2399 Union Blvd Apt 7B. Islip units were advised by Islip FD Dispatch that the caller was the neighboring apartment advising that there was smoke in the callers apartment and the adjacent apartment was on fire. Due to the progressive automatic mutual aid policy, the Bay Shore Fire Department was also notified for 1 engine to respond when the alarm was received.
Assistant Chief Stenger was the first to arrive who found a heavy smoke condition in a 2 story garden apartment building. He requested that a working fire be dispatched at that time. Engine 3-4-7 was the first due engine who secured a water source and stretched an inch and 3/4 attack line to the fire apartment. Islip units entered the unoccupied apartment and extinguished the fire within minutes of arrival.
Islip units conducted overhaul and ventilation of the apartment and completed searches. Searches proved negative as the occupant of the fire was not home at the time of the blaze. There were no injuries at the scene.
Mutual aid was provided by the Bay Shore, East Islip, and Islip Terrace Fire Departments. Islip units were under the command of Chief Of Department Richard Patch (3-4-30).
