My Godfather is past chief Frank Matousek. I have some great memories of him at the firehouse and all the excitement of being able to sit on a fire truck as a child. What a great man...so glad to have found this web site. Thanks for honoring all the people that serve Islip with pride. God Bless you all.
I fondly remember the Islip Fire Department in my youth. My grandfather, Erwin Poetzsch was for years a volunteer Fireman of the Islip Fire Department. We lived up the street at 179 Monell Ave. We would have wonderful parades each year (in the 60's and 70's) and my Grandpa would carry the flag proudly. He was also a WWII veteran.They would ever so kindly hold a Christmas Party complete with Santa Claus and presents. Back then, Santa was usually Grandpa's buddy Cappy Hall, but we didn't know that. My sisters and I were just interested in the presents and candy.The whole family moved to Maine in the early 80's. In 1995, we lost Grandpa to cancer, but we soon found out, his friends at the fire department had not forgotten about him.They held a beautiful memorial service for him a week after his passing (on Veteran's Day 1995). My parents and I drove down and attended.As we arrived at the door, I looked up and noticed that the sign on the front said "In loving memory of our departed member Erwin Poetzsch." It was very emotional and I do have a photo of this in my album.I never knew my Grandfather had so many wonderful and loving friends. Thank you so much for being such a big part of our lives, and for remembering Grandpa the way you did. I know it meant a great deal to him. Greetings Fellow Firefighters, I am writing to you asking for a huge favor. My name is Anna Kegley and am the wife of a firefighter in the small community of Iron River in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am on a mission to make a young mans day a little brighter. Our Fire Chiefs 14 year old son Jacob is in a childrens hospital in Minnesota fighting leukemia for the second time. He is set to have a bone marrow transplant soon but will spend a couple of months in the hospital. Jacob is a true staple of strength at our department. He absolutley loves firefighters so we are hoping you can help us out a little by dropping him a small note of encouragement and if possible maybe add a small token from your department..whether it be a shirt,(adult lg) picture, patch, cap or just a note is fine too. We are just trying to help him add a few smile to his day and getting some support from other departments would be a thrill for him.
